Malware Detection FAQs

Outbreaks, or false negatives, are files whose evolution in time has changed from almost no detection to being detected by several anti-malware engines. This happens because when new malware is released, only a few or even no engines will detect the file as being infected by using static analysis. As time passes, more engines will start to detect and label the file as malicious. Anti-malware engines use signature databases to detect malware, and MetaDefender Cloud makes sure to always have the latest signatures for all it's engines, so that outbreak detection happens as soon as possible

We observe the evolution of engine detection rate in time for all our files. For the ones that are detected initially by less than 3 engines, and the subsequent scan will have a detection rate of at least 5 more engines, we consider these files as Outbreaks and we add them to the lists above. The lists contain the latest Outbreaks detected by MetaDefender Cloud, and the data is refreshed every 30 days

No single anti-malware engine is perfect 100% of the time, and using multiple engines to scan for threats allows users to take advantage of the strengths of each individual engine and to guarantee the earliest possible detection. While the data above shows only a subset of the latest outbreak threats in the wild and utilizes only the Windows-based anti-malware engines in MetaDefender Cloud, it provides an indication of the variability of detection rates and detection time of common malware by the anti-malware community. You can use this data to investigate current threats as well as to watch the detection of new threats grow over time

MetaDefender Cloud intends to be an unbiased service, not promoting one engine over another, and the data above is not intended for comparing the performance of specific engines, for reasons including:

This data comes from SDK and CLI packages, not from endpoint or desktop applications
This data uses static analysis only, not dynamic analysis
This data comes from MetaDefender Cloud search traffic only
This data does not provide an indication for how well an application can protect your computer

Unless having a commercial license and using the private processing feature, files uploaded to MetaDefender Cloud are shared with the anti-malware engine vendors to help in improving their services and products
